Founded by the OG Girlboss herself, Sophia Amoruso, the Girlboss community was built on a foundation of strong, curious, and ambitious women that redefine success on their own terms.
Over the last five years, the Girlboss community has held a conference for these ambitious women called the Girlboss Rally. Over two days, attendees take in inspirational keynote speakers, skill-building workshops, and networking opportunities.
This year, Dash Hudson partnered with Girlboss to lead a workshop at the rally all about how to #BreakTheAlgorithm featuring our very own Head of Content, Michaela Atkinson. Other notable (and amazing) speakers at the conference were: socialite and business mogul, Paris Hilton; Co-founder of Refinery29, Piera Gelardi; Designer, Cynthia Rowley; and VP of Global Marketing at Beats by Dr. Dre, Fabiola Torres, to name a few.
In honor of the fifth annual Girlboss Rally that was held this year, here are five key takeaways from the conference on how you can become your own #GirlbossGoals. 👑
1) Use Failure as Leverage
Plain and simple: “learn from your mistakes.” We heard from some of the most successful women at the Girlboss Rally how failure can help you thrive.
The first time Whitney Cummings got fired from a job was because she was taller than her male co-star. She was devastated. However, if she was never fired from that job, she may not have ever created and starred in two hit sitcoms, produced a movie, or become a best-selling author. Can you say, #winning?
CEO and Co-founder of Ellevest, Sallie Krawcheck, was fired twice from Wall Street for being a woman in the finance industry. This led her to start Ellevest, a digital investment platform aimed toward women with the goal of closing the gender gap prevalent in investing. Now, Sallie’s life mission is to unleash women’s financial power and get them invested in their biggest goals.
When you fall, choose to rise. 💫
2) Be Your Own Brand Ambassador
A common theme amongst the speakers was to embrace your strengths and be your own brand ambassador. Hearing that advice from some of the most influential women in business today was truly inspiring. Psychologist and Founder of Not Therapy, Dr. Lauren, presented “The Revival: Rising Above The Negative Self-Talk.” Sometimes, it’s hard to look past your weaknesses and only focus on the negative. However, if you can hone in on your unique skill set and use that to your advantage — that will be your one-way ticket to success.
Confidence is key. Rupi Kaur, the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Milk and Honey, reiterated this in a beautiful poetry reading. “What is the greatest lesson a woman should learn? That since day one, she’s already had everything she needs within herself. It’s the world that convinced her she did not.”
Your biggest supporter should be you, girlfriend. 👊🏼
3) The Importance of Authentic Storytelling
The Branding 101 session was all about building your brand from the ground up. Some key takeaways from this session were to embrace your true, authentic self. Creating a brand with a head and a heart will allow you to tell stories that will resonate with your audience long-term.
Digital Publicity Manager at Netflix, Seana Johnson, and Style Director at ELLE.com, Nikki Ogunnaike, sat on a panel to reveal their secrets to building a memorable brand. The beauty of storytelling is that it can bring people together. Creating and fostering a community within your brand is just as important as establishing your name.
In this day and age, people and consumers can see through the traditional advertising bullsh*t. Be real with your audience, and you’ll stay afloat. “Perfection is overrated,” said Co-founder of Fleur Marché, and former Director at Goop, Meredith Schroeder.
Bottom line: authenticity is everything. 💎
4) The Truth is in The Data
“When it comes to your visual marketing strategy, data speaks louder than opinions.” — Head of Content at Dash Hudson, Michaela Atkinson.
We’ll let you in on a little secret. Here are the three C’s Michaela highlighted in her Girlboss session to #BreakTheAlgorithm on Instagram:
At Dash Hudson, we believe in the power of data-driven decisions. Co-founder of Good American, Emma Grede, and co-founder of Summer Fridays, Marianna Hewitt, two powerhouse CEOs have the same belief. When speaking on their panel, “How to Convert Your Brand Into Sales,” Emma and Marianna both stressed the importance of letting the data speak for itself. Making decisions based on feedback from their audience/customers through social media was crucial to their success.
#BreakTheAlgorithm (let’s make this a thing)📱
5) Trust Your Gut
One of the best parts of being a woman is our killer intuition. Michelle Phan, OG beauty guru, YouTuber, and entrepreneur had an amazing conversation led by Chief Operating Officer of Girlboss, Neha Gandhi, on identifying market gaps. “Put yourself in the consumer’s eyes to see what’s coming in the future.” That’s how she started subscription-based beauty company, Ipsy, and modern cosmetics line, Em Cosmetics.
The tough part about trusting your gut is that most of the time, that feeling can’t be explained. Intuition is a deep-rooted feeling that goes beyond our conscious mind, and running with it can be a big risk.
But in true finance fashion, let’s put it this way: “High Risk = High Return”. 🤑
That’s a wrap! Those were our 5 key takeaways from the Girlboss Rally 2019.
